I want to say something before you jump into this book.
I am genuinely honored that you're here.
Not in the way people say that to be polite. I mean it in the way that still stops me sometimes — in the middle of a client call or driving home after a planning session — it hits me that what I get to do for a living is help real people finally achieve the freedom they've worked all their lives for.
Free to stop watching the market like it's a threat. Free to book the trip. Free to sleep without the "what if" running in the background. Free to look at each other and say, we did it — we're all set.
That's not a financial outcome. That's a human one. And to have a part in that — to be the person who helped make that moment possible — is something I honestly can't put into words.
Over 35 years, I've sat across from hundreds of couples who worked hard, saved faithfully, and still weren't sure it was going to be enough. When we find their Happy Number — when the income is locked in and the plan is in place — something visibly changes. The shoulders come down. The breath gets easier. Sometimes there are tears.
I get to be part of that moment. It's awesome.
I don't take that lightly. Not for a single client.
So before we get into the strategy, the numbers, and the planning — I just want you to know that the person who wrote this book cares beyond measure that you get to live the retirement that you've always dreamed of. A comfortable one. A confident one. A free one.
That's my mission. My purpose. This book is my attempt to deliver on both.

I'll never forget the day my mom and dad retired.
Bob Kelly worked at Borden's Milk Company — if you remember Elsie the Cow, you remember his employer. He was a milk hauler, a member of the National Guard, and at the end of his career, a multi-state mail hauler. A hard-working man.
During his 20 years at Borden's, he got up at 4:30 every morning, drove into the Detroit warehouse, loaded 1,000 cases of milk into his semi, and worked five to six days a week delivering across metropolitan Detroit.
I learned about hard work from him at a very young age. On school-off days — snow, ice, sweltering summer heat — he'd bring my brothers and me along to help. Hauling heavy cases out of the trailer and into the cooler, all day long. He did that for two decades.
My mom Marilyn worked at AAA of Michigan for over 15 years as a secretary. Dependable, steady, committed. The office all called her "Mare Bear."
When they retired, they had a modest portfolio. They'd both saved in retirement plans. But the real game-changer?
They each had pensions.
Between their two pensions and Social Security, their income was taken care of. Markets went up. Markets went down. The markets didn't touch them.
What I'll never forget is the look on their faces the day they retired. There was this sigh — long, visible, deeply human. Peace settled over them like something finally put down after being carried a long, long time.
My dad's eyes said it before his mouth did: "We earned this — let's enjoy it."
That sigh. That peace. That's what this book is about.
The foundation of a comfortable retirement isn't the size of your portfolio — it's the certainty of the income you need to feel free, no matter what the markets do or how long you live.
Think about what your sigh of relief looks like. Then turn the page.

I'll be honest with you.
I've been doing this work for over 35 years. The most important thing I learned didn't come from a textbook or a conference. It came from watching two completely different generations of retirees — and paying very close attention to what separated the ones who were at peace from the ones who were in fear.
Early in my career, clients sat across from me with something powerful already in place. They had pensions. And Social Security. Their income foundation was largely built before they ever walked through my door. The check was coming every month — rain or shine, bull market or bear market — for the rest of their lives. They were genuinely, visibly, deeply at peace.
In 1978, Congress passed the Revenue Act. Buried inside was Section 401(k) — a legal path for corporations to shift retirement responsibility onto their employees. By the time the dust settled, the pension had been almost completely eliminated.
In 1980, 60% of private-sector workers had a real pension. Today that number is 4%.
The social contract your parents' generation honored — give us your working years, and we will guarantee your retirement — was replaced. Legally. Quietly. And permanently.
Managing risk is not the same as guaranteeing income.
But here's the good news: You can build your own pension. You own it. You control it. No company, no Congress, no market crash can ever take it away.
The 60/40 model was a good tool — for a world where most retirees had pension income underneath them. That world is gone. The tool didn't change with it.
Bond and stock prices now move in the same direction more than 70% of the time. The diversification benefit that made 60/40 work has been eroding for decades. Then 2022 arrived and proved it publicly, painfully, and permanently:
Both sides of the "diversified" portfolio fell at the same time. That was the worst year for bonds in recorded history.
Here's what happened to retirees who began with $1 million in a 60/40 portfolio in 2000:
Take two retirees. Same $1 million. Same portfolio. Same withdrawal rate. One retires in 2000, the other in 2003:
Three years. Same everything. Radically different outcomes. You cannot control when you were born — but you can eliminate this risk entirely.
John and Susan. He was 66, she was 64. They had saved $1.4 million over 35 years. Then 2022 happened:
He had done everything right — by the rules of a system never built for the job he needed it to do. This is not a one-time story. It happened in 2000–02. In 2008. In 2022. It will happen again.
The era is gone. But the peace your parents had is not. It just has to be built differently now.
Almost every couple who came in scared had made one or both of the same two mistakes. They're the natural result of following a system that never answered the most important question in retirement:
When I ask "How much guaranteed monthly income will you need to feel secure?" — there's almost always a long pause, followed by a number that sounds more like a guess than a plan.
Most people have spent decades focused on accumulation — building the pile. But they haven't built a written plan for distribution — how to turn that pile into a lifetime of monthly income.
Your income plan must answer these in writing:
If you can't answer those in writing, you're in the retirement income hope phase. Hope is not a plan.
Most retirees take all their savings and put it in one big bucket, then ask it to simultaneously produce guaranteed income, stay liquid for emergencies, and grow for inflation. When the market drops, all three jobs fail at the same time.
Give each job its own dedicated tool:
Pillar 1: Emergency & Savings — liquid cash earning interest, never used for income
Pillar 2: Social Security — your guaranteed income starting point
Pillar 3: Your Personal Pension — the LifeTime PayCheck™, fills your income gap permanently
Pillar 4: Growth, Income & Inflation Bucket — free to grow because income is guaranteed
Once those four pillars are in place, something shifts. You stop watching the market like it's a life-or-death situation — because for your income, it isn't anymore.
Every plan I've ever built starts with one question: your Happy Number. Once you answer it, the rest practically builds itself.
"If we had $_______ guaranteed every single month for the rest of our lives — no matter how long we live, no matter what the market does — we would be happy. We could stop worrying. We could finally be free."
That blank. That number. That's your Happy Number.
Over 35 years and more than a thousand couples, I've learned that everyone already knows their Happy Number. They just don't have a name for it yet. Nobody has ever asked them directly. Nobody has ever written it down.
It's not a budget number. It's the answer to one deeply personal question: "How much guaranteed monthly income do I need to feel genuinely secure — not just financially comfortable, but emotionally free?"
I've watched this transformation happen hundreds of times. A couple walks in carrying years of market worry. We find their Happy Number and build a plan that covers it — completely, contractually, permanently. And then something shifts.
Once your Happy Number is guaranteed, you stop surviving your retirement. You start living it.
A couple came in not long ago. She was 67, he was 69. Thirty-eight years of saving. They hadn't taken a real vacation in fifteen years. We found their Happy Number: $9,400/month.
It's not the size of the portfolio that determines your retirement quality. It's the certainty of your income.
Liquid cash earning interest — set aside and never touched for income. Your protection against getting life-smacked.
The one piece of the pension generation's guaranteed income that wasn't eliminated. The starting point for your Happy Number.
A guaranteed monthly paycheck for life — for both spouses — that can never go down, never run out, and has nothing to do with the market. Pillar 2 + Pillar 3 = Your Happy Number. Covered. Contractually.
Everything else — stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, real estate. Because your income is already guaranteed, this money has no pressure. It just needs to grow — for inflation, legacy, and the life you want to live.
Pillar 4 can drop 50% tomorrow. Your LifeTime PayCheck™ doesn't change by one cent.
Based on 2026 rates from A-rated carriers, for a couple age 65 turning on income at 70:
When most people hear "annuity" they go blank or skeptical. Some of that reputation is earned — there are products that are complicated, expensive, and badly suited for income. What I'm about to describe is different: a Fixed Indexed Annuity with a Lifetime Income Benefit Rider, designed to do one thing exceptionally well.
You only need to understand five sentences.
1. You place a lump sum with an A-rated insurance company with the financial strength to back a lifetime promise.
2. They promise — by legal contract and state-approved reserves — to pay you and your spouse a guaranteed monthly paycheck for the rest of both your lives, no matter how long you live.
3. That paycheck can never go down — not if the market crashes 80%, not if interest rates go to zero.
4. If either of you ever needs long-term care, the care waiver can increase your monthly income by 150% to 200% for up to five years.
5. When both spouses have passed, the remaining balance passes to your heirs privately — without the costs, delays, or stress of probate.
Step 1: Your deposit is placed in a Fixed Indexed Annuity. It credits interest based on an index like the S&P 500 — but with a 0% floor. Good year: you receive a portion of the gain. Bad year: you lose nothing.
Step 2: A separate income account grows at a guaranteed 6–10% per year for 10–15 years, even if the market is flat. This powers your guaranteed income.
Step 3: When you're ready, you receive an age-based payout (6–8%+) of your income account value every year — for the rest of both your lives. It never decreases. It never runs out.
Illustrative example. Age 65, joint life, income at 70. Actual results vary. Always request a personalized illustration.
The companies I work with — all rated A or better — have paid every claim for 50, 100, even 150 years. Through the Great Depression. Through 2008. Through a global pandemic. Not one penny of guaranteed income was missed.
There's a voice in the back of your head: "But what if I miss a big market run? What if I just stay invested for my income needs?" Let's do the math honestly — without spin, without agenda.
Tom and Carol. Both age 62, retiring at 67. They have $1 million saved and want to dedicate $500,000 to their income plan, with a goal of $50,000 per year. If they keep that $500,000 in the market — what return do they need?
"Do you want a plan that has to work — or one that is guaranteed to work?"
Tom looked at Carol. Carol looked at Tom. He said: "When it comes to income, we like plans that are guaranteed to work."
The market path isn't wrong. Markets do grow. But for the specific dollars you're counting on to fund your retirement income — dollars that cannot afford to fail — the market path demands you trade certainty for hope.
If you're anything like my clients, you've worked too hard and too long to retire on hope.
This is the moment everything in this book has been building toward. Not a number. Not a strategy. Not a product. A moment. A purpose.
The moment I wait for — after the Happy Number is identified, after the Four Pillars are in place and the income is covered — is always the same. I ask every client to do one simple thing:
Look your spouse in the eye. And say these six words out loud:
Not "I think we'll be okay." Not "The advisor says don't worry." The test requires six quiet, certain words — with no knot in the throat, no fingers crossed.
When you say it and mean it — the money worry is over. Not managed. Over.
A couple. He was 68, she was 66. Forty years of doing everything right. But he finally said it: "I lie awake at night wondering what happens to her if I go first. What if the market crashes again?"
We built their LifeTime PayCheck™ that afternoon:
He said the six words. They both took a long, slow breath. And they quietly smiled at each other.
When you say those six words without hesitation, you're living a reality: "We are mathematically, contractually, and permanently all set." Your Happy Number is covered. The market can do whatever it wants — because your income doesn't need it anymore.
If those words still feel out of reach, the next chapter gives you the exact worksheet to close the gap — in 15 minutes.
If those six words still feel out of reach — they may be closer than you think.
The Blueprint in Chapter 8 takes 10 minutes. The call takes 15. That's all it takes to know.
Here's the exact worksheet my clients use. At the end, you'll know three things: your Happy Number, how much Social Security covers, and exactly how much Pillar 3 needs to fill.

You came to this book because something didn't feel right. Maybe it was a market drop. A quarterly statement that kept you up at night. A quiet conversation with your spouse that ended with more questions than answers.
What you leave with is the answer — and a plan.
The same peace Bob and Marilyn had the day they retired. The same sigh. The same quiet certainty: "We earned this." That certainty is still available. You just have to build it. And now you know exactly how.
Your LifeTime PayCheck™ is waiting.
One conversation is all it takes to make it real.

Rick Kelly, CSA, CAS · Pinnacle Retirement Inc. · Fort Collins, Colorado
Rick Kelly has spent 35 years helping self-funded retirees replace income uncertainty with income certainty and freedom throughout retirement.
Early in his career, Rick worked alongside the pension generation — clients who retired with guaranteed income already in place. He watched them retire with peace, freedom, and the quiet confidence of people who knew their income was handled.
As pensions disappeared and the financial industry handed everyone a 401(k) and a promise to "manage the risk," Rick watched a new kind of retirement emerge — one built on hope instead of certainty. He couldn't accept that.
Today Rick works exclusively with self-funded retirees ages 59–75 who need guaranteed income from a portion of their portfolios. He retired his securities licenses of 29 years back in 2016 to focus on one thing: replacing uncertainty with certainty.
Rick is a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) and Certified Annuity Specialist (CAS), a speaker, and a straight-talking voice in an industry full of noise. He and his wife Charlene of 32 years, their kids Gavin and Tori, rescue dog Harvee Joy, and cat Oliver fully enjoy the Colorado lifestyle.
You came to this book because something didn't feel right. Maybe it was a market drop. Maybe it was a quarterly statement that kept you up at night. Maybe it was a quiet conversation with your spouse that ended with more questions than answers. Maybe it was just a feeling — that the plan you have isn't quite the plan you need.
Whatever brought you here, you leave with something different than you arrived with. You leave with a framework. A language for what you actually need. A name for the number that ends income worry. And the knowledge that the peace your parents had — that deep, quiet, earned certainty — is still available to you. It just has to be built differently now.
The worksheet in Resource 1 showed you your gap. The questions in Resource 2 showed you what to demand from any advisor. Resource 3 showed you exactly what happens when you call. There's only one thing left.
"We did it. We're all set."
The six most powerful words in retirement — spoken with certainty.
That moment is not reserved for people who got lucky with the market. It's reserved for people who decided to stop hoping and start planning.
